Altar servers

Being a server means serving God and His people during the celebration of the Mass.  They assist the priest at Mass as well as enhance the celebration by leading various processions: entrance, gospel, presentation and recessional. Some servers also serve as thurifers who handle the incense on solemn occasions.

Requirements for being an altar server at OLPH - you may become an altar server once you have received the sacrament of 1st Eucharist and are enrolled in the 3rd grade.  After proper training you will be scheduled to serve at Mass based on your availability.

Lectors

Proclaim the reading at Mass. They are also responsible for the Intercessions when no deacon is present. Lectors must prepare ahead of time by practicing and understanding the reading using the Lector's Workbook. To become a lector one must attend a training session and be prepared to attend Lector rehearsal on a needed basis.  A strong commitment is needed to be present to the people of God by proclaiming the readings to make them understandable to those in the pews. A sense of reverence and dedication to the ministry by being there when scheduled or finding a replacement is also needed. Lectors are scheduled according to their availability.

Ushers

Greet people as they arrive for Mass. Choose parishioners to bring the gifts of bread and wine forward. They are responsible for the collection and take money to the safe. Give out any special envelopes, cards, notices before, or during Mass as requested. Distribute bulletins after Mass and also assist those physically challenged in receiving communion. Ushers are needed for all Masses and also for special celebrations.  To become an usher, one needs a sense of welcoming of God's people and of service to all those in our midst.
